Breath of the Spiritual Warrior
In our Golden Lotus Hatha tradition, as passed down through the direct lineage of Paramahansa Yogananda, the breath is the bridge between physical effort and spiritual realization. We turn our focus to the primary weapon in our spiritual arsenal: the Cleansing Breath.
The Mechanics of the “Double Breath”
The Cleansing Breath is a precise, deliberate action: a deep, revitalizing inhalation through the nose, followed by a double exhalation through the mouth—one short, sharp burst followed by a long, sweeping release: Huh, Huhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
This isn’t merely a sigh; it is a total emptying of the lungs. By exhaling so completely, we create a literal and figurative vacuum. We cast out the carbon dioxide and the stagnant “stale air” of our thoughts, making room for the fresh, oxygenated prana that follows.
Preparing for “The New”
In a Hatha class, we are constantly transitioning. The Cleansing Breath is what allows us to approach a new asana with the “beginner’s mind” of a warrior. By performing the double exhalation before a new posture, we clear the slate of the previous movement. It resets the nervous system, sharpening our focus and centering our will. It signals to the body: the past is gone; I am prepared and focused for what is next. This mental readiness is what distinguishes a physical workout from a spiritual practice.
Drawing Prana to the Spiritual Highway
This breath is deeply rooted in Yogananda’s Energization Exercises. He taught us that, through the will, we can draw energy into the body through the medulla oblongata and store it in the brain and spine. As we perform the Cleansing Breath, we aren’t just oxygenating the blood; we are directing that life force. The double exhalation vibrates the spine, shaking loose the tension and drawing the prana inward to the “central highway” of the soul.
From Breath to Vibration
There is a sacred transition that happens when we empty the lungs: the breath becomes vibration. After the Huh, Huhhhhhhhhhhhhh, there is a moment of profound stillness. In that void, we feel the subtle hum of energy in the spine.
This is where we cultivate the “Spiritual Warrior” within—alertly relaxed, focused at the spiritual eye, and vibrating with the life force of the Universe. We move into our next posture not as a body seeking a stretch, but as a soul seeking expansion.
